Heather Ratych, BASc, MSW, RSW
Qualifications and Experience:
Heather is a psychotherapist and Social Worker who helps guide women through the excitement, anxiety, depression, stress, overwhelm, grief and chaos of pregnancy and motherhood. She works with you to bring gentle and mindful awareness and compassion to the thoughts and emotions that are keeping you stuck and unable to move along your individual and/or parenting journey. She then works with you to connect you to your own inner-wisdom, build resilience, and access supports (finding your village), to help you build a healthy mindset and lifestyle for both you and your family.
Heather has been providing assessment services, psychotherapy and consultation in the Durham region and surrounding areas since 2005. She graduated with a Master’s degree in Social Work from York University and is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Since that time, she has worked in various settings with a focus on mental health. Her practice is focused on working with women, particularly mothers, with a wide-range of presenting issues and concerns. It was her experience of becoming a mother that led her to specialize in supporting parents in their adjustment to parenthood. The joys and unique challenges of early parenthood are one of the most significant life changes we can experience, and many of us are doing this without support. Heather is passionate about helping parents thrive as they raise their children, and in supporting women to feel grounded, confident and connected.
Heather’s approach to working with clients is transparent and authentic, meaning that she shares with clients what she is thinking and why. She believes in creating a relationship that builds trust and respect, and in creating a safe environment for her clients to explore the most sensitive and painful areas of their lives. Heather believes that all people inherently possess the potential for success and happiness. Through her work, she identifies her clients’ strengths and abilities and identifies how they can harness these to overcome obstacles in their lives. Her goal is to enable individuals to find creative, satisfying and long-lasting solutions to their difficulties.
All people are unique, so no one process will work for every client. Heather draws from various theoretical orientations including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Hypnotherapy, and Solution-Focused frameworks. She has experience working with a broad range of issues and will draw from these various approaches depending on a client’s particular needs and presenting issues. She is deeply committed to helping clients to develop the tools they need to address their difficulties, to understand themselves more fully, and to live more fulfilling lives.
How Psychotherapy Can Help
My role as a therapist is to create a warm, empathetic and supportive environment in which you feel comfortable to explore your feelings, emotional reactions, and problematic thoughts and behaviours, while receiving support. I will listen carefully and without judgement, to look for patterns in your thinking and behaviour that may be contributing to your difficulties. Then, we will work together to determine strategies for problem solving that you can begin to apply to your life. This will assist you to gain a deeper understanding of yourself, become more assertive and decisive, build confidence and self esteem, manage the thoughts that create feelings such as anxiety and depression, learn to control your anger, have positive relationships, and cope more effectively with stress.
